The OHSAA Board of Directors has approved a schedule for the 2013 Ohio High School State Football Championships. With the addition of a seventh division the Championships will now begin with one day earlier with a Thursday night game. One game will be played Thursday night December 5, three games Friday December 6, and three games Saturday, December 7. Which divisions will play on which day and time has not yet been determined.
In 2012 the OHSAA Board of Directors approved the proposal to add a seventh division in the football playoffs beginning in 2013. Division I will be comprised of the top ten percent of high schools based on enrollment. This will result in 72 Division I schools and approximately 108 schools in each of the remaining six divisions.
All seven divisions will qualify 32 teams to the tournament. Commissioner Daniel B. Ross announced, “Adding a seventh division not only helps address the enrollment disparity in Division I, but it also will create 32 more tournament opportunities for student-athletes, their schools and their communities, many of which have never or rarely experienced the playoffs.”
